Director – E-Commerce Technology


The Director of E-Commerce Technology is a key senior leadership role in the Commercial Technology and Corporate Systems portfolio and will be responsible for all technology aspects of building, maintaining and modernizing United.Com. United.Com is one of the largest E-Commerce sites by sales volume at just under $13B in 2015. The portfolio covers web site architecture and engineering, with a view of continuously improving the United.Com experience for our customers. S/he will have responsibility for a budget of $15-20MM, with approximately 100 onshore and offshore resources.

United is undergoing an exciting transformation on many technology fronts. The Director of E-Commerce Technology will be critical in helping achieve success in this journey by jointly setting up a digital factory that co-locates the technology and product teams to enable agile product envisioning, design, build and activation, and firmly instilling the continuous integration mentality in his/her team. Additionally, s/he will nurture and manage the relationship with the digital products team to ensure that the technology and product teams are aligned and delivering value to our customers and business.

Reporting to the Managing Director, E-Commerce and Merchandising Technology, s/he will be located at our Corporate Support Center at Willis Tower in Chicago, IL. Approximately 20% of travel will be required for this position.


  • Partner with the E-Commerce product team to define United Airline’s E-Commerce strategy

  • Lead, build and motivate a talented team of E-Commerce technology professionals providing vision, direction and guidance

  • Optimize the experience on United.Com to improve conversion and increase repeat purchases

  • Analyze and assess the effectiveness of all existing operations and current/future needs based on new technology and market competition

  • Set-up a digital factory in partnership with the product team to enable agile and continuous product delivery. The long term goal of the factory is to enable and accelerate digital transformation within United Airlines

  • Develop and employ sustainable model to enable the continuous improvement of United.Com from both technology and product perspectives

  • Review end-to-end architecture of United.Com in partnership with the Enterprise Architecture team, jointly recommending a new and long-term sustainable architecture for the web site, and plan and deliver the new technology architecture for United.Com

  • Identify and apply proven techniques and tools to improve the overall quality and engineering pace of delivery of new product delivery

  • Develop, report on and continuously improve KPIs by enhancing our site monitoring and optimization capabilities to ensure that we are always focused on end-user experience

  • Develop Release Management processes designed to facilitate the successful roll-out of new releases, security patches and other updates to United.Com

  • Partner with the Infrastructure and Enterprise Architecture teams to jointly design, develop and activate the cloud strategy for United.Com to enable sustained very high global availability and performance of the site


  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, related field and/or equivalent work experience required

  • Master’s degree a plus

  • 10+ years of management experience in an IT or leadership related role

  • Experience in multiple technical platforms, operating systems, databases and development languages including but not limited to web, mainframe, Unix and Client Server

  • Deep experience managing complex staffing models composed of employees, contractors and long-term outsourcing agreements, and influencing senior level management and key stakeholders

  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Strong project organization skills, including prioritization, planning and organization

  • Demonstrated understanding of performance management, business consulting, project management and applicable technology


  • Experience in travel industry, especially airline related


  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
