Job overview and responsibilities

The Director, Commercial Technology Architecture serves as the Chief Architect for United's commercial technology systems. The role is directly responsible for influencing the design, performance and evolution of, the United mobile app, passenger service system (PSS), and a range of systems critical to revenue and customer experience. This position will play a critical enabling role in cloud migration and evaluation/enablement of next-generation technologies. The role will manage the architecture governance process, define technical standards, and supervise a team of 4-5 principal architects. This is a senior role, responsible for acting as a trusted advisor to United's executive team in defining the technology vision and landscape for United's commercial systems.

  • Lead architecture development & design assurance for strategic commercial technology initiatives

  • Manage the life-cycle and total cost of ownership for technologies leveraged in commercial systems

  • Manage the architecture governance & review process for all commercial portfolio projects

  • Manage the evaluation and induction of emerging technologies

  • Manage timely communication and coordination across all enterprise technology stakeholders involved in the architecture governance & review processes


  • Minimum of 10 years experience in multiple technology areas, or in an established architecture office in a Fortune 500 level company. IT experience must include a blend of software, middleware, database systems and infrastructure disciplines

  • Senior leadership experience in leading high-performing technical teams

  • Experience explaining complex IT environments to executive leaders, with a strong ability to influence senior decision makers

  • Architecture & design of high-performance distributed transactional systems

  • Agile delivery methodologies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software or Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or Business Administration with an IT focus

  • Knowledge of architecture frameworks (e.g. TOGAF)

  • Applications architecture modeling & methods

  • Data modeling for databases and services

  • SOA and API development and management

  • High availability design

  • Executive communication skills

  • Ability to present complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

  • Ability to motivate, lead teams and direct work with limited supervision and in ambiguous situations

  • Complex fact-based, bias-aware decision-making

  • Evangelize and promote best practices and technical advances

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
