Overview and Job Responsibilities

As a Ground Service Equipment Technician you will work in a fast paced environment. At airport terminals across the country, the United Airlines Ground Service Technician plays a very important role in providing qualify service to our internal customers. The Ground Service Equipment technician should have a thorough knowledge of operating, maintaining and repairing lights to heavy-duty trucks as well as related airport ground equipment including:

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair and complete preventative maintenance on Ground Service Equipment (both motorized and non-motorized). This includes both gas and diesel engines, as well as heavy industrial equipment such as large aircraft air conditioners, air starts and ground electrical power units

  • Work will include diagnostic testing and repair of gas engines, transmissions, suspension and brake systems

  • Electronics diagnostics and trouble-shooting experience

  • Mechanical, electrical, welding and hydraulic experience

  • Climbing and working for ladders and/or walking for extended periods of time

  • Moderate lifting

  • Work may be performed on the ramp (terminal or hangar area), or other outdoor and indoor airport areas where employees may be exposed to a wide variety of weather conditions, noise and fumes for extended periods of time

  • Indoor work may require exposure to noise, ground equipment and machinery, and exposure to chemical and petroleum fuel fumes

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of basic shop safety rules and procedures

Ground Service Equipment Technicians must be willing and able to work around the clock shifts, including weekends and holidays and work outdoors in all weather conditions. Schedules are bid and awarded according to seniority. Related work experience is a plus.

Ground Service Equipment Technicians are represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT). salary increases will be administered according to the current IBT/United contract. Shift differentials of $0.51/hour and $0.58/hour for working the afternoon and evening shift respectively are paid in addition to the hourly rate. New employees are required to join the union within 90 days of employment. There is an initiation fee for joining the union and subsequent monthly dues which are set by the IBT Local Lodge.


  • High School Diploma, GED or the educational equivalent of these (from another country)

  • At least twenty four months experience required, previous experience includes: trouble-shooting, repair and maintenance of both gas and diesel engines; electrical and hydraulic systems; or experience working with motorized systems supporting airport ground-handling operations equipment

  • Valid U.S. driver's license

  • Acceptable driving record


  • Certification of completion from an accredited automotive school

  • ASE certification

  • Basic computer knowledge (data entry/retrieval)


  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Must be willing to take a pre-placement hearing and vision tests, and drug screen

  • Must be willing and able to work any shift assigned in a 365 day a year/24 hour a day operation that will include early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed

  • Must be willing and able to climb and work from ladders

  • Must be willing and able to walk for extended periods of time

  • Must be willing and able to perform work that involves moderate lifting

  • Must be willing and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Must be willing and able to work where there will be exposure to high noise levels

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualifications

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is essential function of the position
