The Airport Operations department keeps operations at our airports running smoothly through planning, organization and supervision.

Job Overview and Responsibilities

Airport Operation Safety interns will work with various business units in the Airport Operations division using analytical, technical, and consulting skills to complete value-added projects. Work may include measurement & analysis, investigation, process improvement techniques, and the development and validation of operations models. Interns are also expected to gain an understanding of both United as a business and how it generates value for its customers. Intern assignments may include:

  • Gathering and analyzing data of United’s various operations to make fact-based, data-driven recommendations

  • Using computer and technical skills (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, Access etc.) to create tools for use by other departments

  • Assisting in the injury and damage investigation process

  • Presenting compelling findings to business leaders leading to quantifiable improvements


  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Proficiency with Excel and other Microsoft Office products

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on teamwork

  • Ability to travel up to 5%.

  • In process of obtaining Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, mathematics, or closely related technical/quantitative field

  • Must be a junior/rising senior during the summer of 2019

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualifications

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position


  • Aviation Business Management experience

  • Experience utilizing a wide variety of databases for analytical and investigative trending

  • Experience in creating presentations for senior leadership
