Continuous Improvement & Enterprise Optimization Overview
Continuous Improvement & Enterprise Optimization (CIEO) focuses on how we can advance the quality and efficiency of what we do across our operations and around the world. The objective of the group is to provide thought leadership through business insights and advanced analytics that challenge the status quo. We partner with a variety of business units (e.g. Airport Operations, Technical Operations, Network Planning, Revenue Management, etc.) to create value through process improvement, change management, analytical modeling and research.
Meet the CIEO Team
Interns will work with various business units along with Analyst/Sr. Analysts in the CIEO division using analytical, technical, and consulting skills to complete value-added projects. Work may include measurement & analysis (time and motion studies), statistical data analysis, process improvement techniques, and the development and validation of operations models. Interns are also expected to gain an understanding of both United as a business and how it generates value for its customers. Intern assignments may include:
Gathering and analyzing data of United’s various operations to make fact-based, data-driven recommendations
Using computer and technical skills (e.g. Excel, VBA, etc.) to create tools for use by other departments
Utilizing simulation techniques in SIMIO/ARENA to analyze & improve business processes
Performing measurement and analysis (time and motion studies) in different environments including airports, maintenance bases, customer contact centers, etc.
Presenting compelling findings to business leaders leading to quantifiable improvements
Critical Skills and Experience
Internship requires at least a five month commitment; target start date is January 2019
Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student with a major in Industrial Engineering and have completed courses in basic industrial engineering and statistics
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
Proficiency with Excel and other Microsoft Office products
Experience with SIMIO/ARENA, Minitab, Visual Basic (VBA), and other programming tools is preferred
Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on teamwork
Positions are based in Chicago (travel may be required, up to 50-60%)
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship or future sponsorship for a full/part time position
