Medical Specialist

Overview

Serve as a subject matter expert to provide review of medial documentation, support, information, and coordination in a high volume, highly productive Six Sigma Lean Cell and execute medical policy and standards, while complying with the needs of each Business Partner unit.Review of medical documentation supporting all types of absences both short and long term, and execute medical policy and standards, while complying with the needs of each Business Partner unit. Responsible for ensuring all Shared Services work streams are administered consistently throughout the corporation and take action to resolve issues in a continuous improvement environment to ensure service level agreement of 16 business hours is met/exceeded. Responsible for the daily operation of the OPCMD/Medical Lean Cell serving as a resource person in providing support, information, and coordination of medical documentation that includes but is not limited to, processing non-occupational absence documentation, outside employment review, annual mechanic questionnaires, FMLA certifications, pre-employment documentation, fitness for duty evaluations and extended illness documentation. Responsible for process of documents with the objective of improving efficiency, accuracy, productivity, and delivery with hassle-free and excellent customer service to all employees company wide. Responsible to ensure delivery of consistent medical review with regards to the support of absence documentation, while ensuring compliance with United’s standard medical policy, all state/local laws, ADA and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a subject matter expert to provide support internally and externally by responding to questions, provide assistance with processing of requests/documents, and delivers consistent medical review by providing support, clarification, information and coordination of medical documentation that includes but is not limited to processing non-occupational absence documentation, outside employment review, annual mechanic questionnaires, FMLA certifications, pre-employment documentation, fitness for duty evaluations, return to work clearances and extended illness documentation.

  • Accurate development, and appropriate distribution, of occupational, non-occupational and pre-employment Assessment of Functional Capability forms for restrictions over 90 days to determine possible accommodation

  • Communicate effectively, accurately and professionally with internal customers, managers, representatives from WC, HR, and LR via correspondence through e-mails, phone calls and correspondence to the employee and local management.

  • Serve as subject matter expert, with the ability to identify and resolve complex issues, conflicts and determine best course of action on complicated escalated issues from supervisors, managers and employees with minimal supervision.

  • Investigate and review employee’s past medical history utilizing UA medical records, scheduling systems, absence management systems and disability guidelines

  • Updates and maintains electronic employee medical files and chart notes

  • Ability to plan, multitask, and prioritize issues in decision making.

  • Dependable, reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the Medical Specialist position.

  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Education

  • RN, NP, PA, MD or DO degree required

Certification

  • Current license in the state of practice required

  • Lean Six Sigma experience and/or Green/Black Belt certified preferred

Knowledge/Skills

  • Chart review, airline knowledge or operational experience preferred

  • Experience

  • Two or more years of administrative health care experience required

  • Experience with FMLA, EIS, Occupational, and/or Medical Program administration preferred

  • Knowledge of CBA absence management language and experience in supporting a large and diverse unionized workforce preferred

Other

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Strong organizational and customer service skills.

  • Two or more years of experience in review, analysis and compilation of medical documents.

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
