United Airlines Senior Business Analyst - IT in Chicago, Illinois

Job overview and responsibilities

We are looking for a Business Analyst with some PM skills who will be helping to oversee the notifications portfolio and working closely with UX and IT partners to deliver on key notification enterprise initiatives. Work involved will include gathering requirements, ad hoc requests, answering questions from different stakeholders, troubleshooting with relevant IT teams on notifications inquiries and writing user stories in JIRA. Additional work may involve running daily stand-up meetings and grooming sessions (in parallel with IT BA and PM). A good portion of the time will be spent meeting with stakeholders to collect and continuously improve the notifications framework and the BA must be comfortable with engaging with stakeholders of all levels. BA will need to work closely with IT partners to make sure we are delivering to our notifications roadmap and stakeholder timelines. Must be comfortable balancing many project workstreams at once (could be more than 10 at a time).

  • Translates high level requirements into detailed level requirements (user stories) to be consumed by the development pods in each sprint, while ensuring stories and features are added iteratively to the product to add overall value

  • Manages a story backlog to ensure readiness of user stories for the upcoming sprint

  • Facilitates agile rituals such as inception, iteration and story kickoff, estimation sessions, and help to keep team up-to-date with changes in priorities and to be available to answer questions quickly

  • Analyzes data to ensure features are aligned with product goals/objectives and delivering the most business value

  • Creates acceptance criteria that is clear, concise and actionable

  • Works with User Experience (UX) analysts to ensure prototypes convey story intent

  • Works with Dev and QA to understand the boundaries of any given story

  • Contributes to overall definition of strategy and scope, including working with business stakeholders to understand ‘why’ we are working on something before development begins

  • Identifies opportunities for improvement across product, process and team

  • Mentors other BAs in the organization in order to build skills


  • Bachelors Degree in related field (engineering, Information systems, etc)

  • 2+ years of experience as a Business Analyst in an agile environment

  • Experience working with customer-facing/customer-related products

  • Experience writing user stories with TFS and/or JIRA and backlog grooming

  • Experience in the E-commerce space

  • Ability to work independently and work closely with different key partners (UX, IT, business, etc.)

  • Attention to detail and self-starter

  • Previous experience quickly learning and understanding complex systems

  • Great communication skills

  • Experience juggling multiple initiatives at once

  • Worked in agile environment and understanding of SDLC

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position


  • Master's degree

  • PMP certification

  • 4+ years of experience as a Business Analyst in an agile environment

  • Strong knowledge of mobile technologies (especially as it relates to notifications)

  • Experience managing work remotely for a 3rd party vendor

  • Experience in the customer notification space (push, SMS, email, etc.) and experience in customer messaging in general

  • Has previously worked for an airline or within the travel industry
