Job overview and responsibilities

The Senior Manager is responsible and accountable for advancing enterprise data security efforts by operationalizing security technologies for all of United and implementing data security policies & metrics. This role is responsible for understanding the data landscape across United and developing enterprise strategy to roll out security technologies prioritized by data usage, defining monitoring policies and working with leaders across the organization for identification of enterprise toolsets. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success driving data and content classification, organization change management, tool implementation and employee training programs.


  • Works cross-functionally with business and Information Technology departments to deliver a world class information protection strategy.

  • Understands data landscape across United including and not limited to business, technology, third parties and airport functions.

  • Collaborates with IT teams to integrate data standards across standard lifecycle management processes.

  • Establishes partnerships across the organization to develop, document and implement security technologies, monitoring policies, identifying enterprise toolsets and best practices.


  • Works with a cross-functional team, to integrate defined standards across teams such as Data Architecture, Data Retention, Metadata Management etc.

  • Coordinates the operationalization of all IT Security tools, technologies, people, processes and procedures enterprise-wide, ensuring internal and external standards are followed.

  • Coordinates remediation of non-compliant areas of business and Information Technology departments.

IT Process Mgmt and Administrative:

  • Accountable for administrative management of IT professionals, either as direct reports or sourced.

  • Define, prioritize, allocate resources, track and provide status reporting of work assignments, projects and programs.

  • Responsible for individual performance assessments and improvement plans.


  • Bachelor or Master’s degree (preferably in Computer Science or Cyber Security) or any combination of equivalent education, experience, and formal training that allows the candidate to meet the requirements of the job.

  • 8 – 10 years of experience working with and rolling out IT Security technologies in a large matrixed organization.

  • Strong background in Information Security Services, Security Operations, Information Systems Service Management, IT audit, and/or IT Risk Management.

  • Ability to manage and coordinate all aspects of departmental operations including tactical & strategic planning, budgeting, staffing, resource allocation, coaching, mentoring, providing direction, delivering reviews, setting objectives, etc.

  • Ability to directly manage one or more department cost centers. Manage capital and operational budgets for projects including forecasting needs, appropriation requests, tracking costs, investigating variances, making corrections, etc.

  • Significant prior Data Security related leadership experience.

  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.

  • Strong subject matter expertise in the fields of IT Security, Data Classification, Data Loss Prevention and Security Technologies.

  • Expert knowledge of data classification best practices, procedures and standards.

  • Working knowledge and/or hands on experience with tools and services used to support data classification and data security policies.

  • Familiarity with compliance regulations, IT, security frameworks and standards (i. e. GDPR, NIST 800, ISO/IEC 27002, HIPAA, PCI, SOX, HITRUST)

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position


  • Ideal candidate will possess all of the above qualification, plus airline industry experience and a proven track record managing departmental teams in large, multi-platform mission critical IT environments that are complex, diverse and fast paced.
