Job overview and responsibilities

As a Solution Architect, you’ll be responsible for turning a concept, typically identified as a gap in architecture or an initiative on a portfolio roadmap, into implementable plan for delivery. You’ll design high performance, scalable solutions for large volume data ingestion, processing and consumption that meet the needs of our enterprise. You’ll interpret customer requirements and develop design solutions based on alternative analysis, providing detailed assessments against applicable requirements, establishing the overall system architecture baseline. The Solution Architect will develop appropriate standards and capabilities to support United’s strategic vision to maximize ROI and leverage technology and cloud trends to architect future business strategies.

  • Work with Data Engineering stakeholders to design architectural standards and principles and develop key objects and documentation to support adoption and adherence to these standards and principles

  • Develop solution designs in accordance with those standards and principles

  • Understand and identify gaps, clarify requirements and design an optimal solution

  • Review solutions and designs of peers, including data models, pipeline design and provide appropriate feedback including performance optimization

  • Support peers by delivering solutions that reduce/manage risk and deliver value

  • Interpret business challenges, identify trends and emerging technologies, and recommend solution alternatives and best practices

Required

  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical discipline or equivalent combination of training and experience

  • 7+ years of professional technology work experience, 3+ years consulting experience and defining roadmaps and architecture with strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills with experience exercising mature judgment

  • Programming / Scripting (Scala, Python, Java, C/C++, Bash, Korn Shell)

  • Linux / Windows (Command line)

  • AWS and Azure cloud platforms, along with cloud warehouse like redshift and Snowflake and big data (Hadoop, Flume, HBase, Hive, Map-Reduce, Oozie, Sqoop, Spark)

  • Deep understanding of data concepts (ETL, near-/real-time streaming, data structures, metadata and workflow management

  • Markup languages (JSON, XML, YAML)

  • Testing and data quality (TDD, unit, regression, automation)

  • Solving complex data and technology problems

  • Ability to iterate quickly in an agile development process

  • Excellent analytical/troubleshooting skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English to narrate data driven insights and technical approach

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

Preferred

  • MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical discipline or equivalent combination of training and experience

  • Exposure to any of the following Analytics and Information Management competencies: Data Management and Architecture, Performance Management, Information Delivery

  • DevOps tools (GitHub, Jira) and methodologies (Agile, Scrum, Kanban, Test Driven Development)

  • Ability to work quickly with an eye towards writing clean code that is efficient and reusable

  • Ability to build prototypes for new features that will delight our users and are consistent with business goals
