As a Painter you will work in a fast-paced San Francisco Maintenance Operations Center, the Painter plays a very important role in providing quality service to our internal customers. Under the direction of the Facility Maintenance Supervisor, or the Lead, the Painter will be responsible for repair and maintenance of the facility and equipment.

Painters must be able to work around the clock shifts, including weekends and holidays, in the outdoors in all weather conditions. Schedules are bid and awarded according to seniority.


  • Perform duties to apply enamel and epoxy coating materials to obtain high grade and decorative finishes on a variety of parts or products.

  • Mix and maintain paint materials at specified consistencies and viscosities to ensure proper coverage of sprayed parts and products

  • Match colors, texture and two tone surfaces, bake properly for special and unusual finishes and allow for change of color during baking and drying cycles

  • Inspect and touch up surfaces as required to maintain work quality standards

  • Maintain work area and equipment in clean condition

  • Notify supervisor of unusual equipment or material problems

Painters are represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT). Salary increases will be administered according to the current IBT/United contract. Shift differentials of $.51 and $.58 cents per hour for working an afternoon or evening shift respectively are paid in addition to the hourly rate. New employees are required to join the union within ninety (90) days of employment. There is an initiation fee for joining the union and subsequent monthly union dues


  • High School diploma/GED or education equivalent

  • Proficient at the following tasks: Able to read blueprints, use of brushes, rollers, airless and HVIP spray equipment to apply paint, stains and other finishes to walls, ceilings, roadways and other equipment

  • Mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary to do material estimates

  • Completion of a recognized four year Apprenticeship Program, or equivalent training, or two years of verifiable experience as a skilled Painter

  • Familiar with different base paints, various thinners, reducers, etc., and with painting equipment, ladders, staging, falls, planks, etc., and safety involved


  • Knowledge of residential or industrial painting trade, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety

  • Knowable on the use of primers or sealers to be used for the preparation of surfaces for finish coats including sanding, scraping, washing

  • Practical working knowledge of the selection and care of tools, procedures, etc.


  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Must have a good driving record

  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but no limited to, lifting equipment (up to 50 lbs. unassisted) bending, standing, climbing or walking

  • In addition to passing United's background investigation and pre-employment testing, candidate must be able to clear a criminal history check in order to obtain and retain credentials necessary for the position

  • Must be available to work any shift that is assigned to you within a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week operation which can include late nights, early hours, weekends and holidays

  • Employees may bid for schedules several times a year and schedules are awarded according to seniority

  • Regular attendance and punctuality in accordance with United's policies is required

  • Overtime available/required depending upon operational need

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
