Route Planning and Strategy Overview

The Route Planning and Strategy department is responsible for ownership of United’s P&L and directing our competitive strategy in the dynamic and complex airline industry. Our team determines where we fly and what aircraft to fly there – we research new destinations, improve the profitability of existing destinations, and plan the future strategy for each geography in which we compete.

We determine our aircraft fleet strategy, including evaluating aircraft purchases and retirements and optimizing seating configurations on our large and diverse fleet. We act as architects in strategically planning and building United’s route network structure, by optimizing hub connectivity, analyzing the impact of economic trends, and forecasting demand. We rely on practical applications of game theory as we model the industry reaction of each change in United’s network, and work to anticipate the moves of our competitors.

Job overview and responsibilities

The Associate Analyst role is responsible for building United’s global route network to maximize profitability. Depending on the specific role, responsibilities may include:

  • Managing a portfolio of markets by forecasting and executing tactical and strategic recommendations for new flights, reduced service, or frequency or aircraft changes

  • Evaluating and making recommendations to senior leadership on aircraft purchases, retirements, or reconfigurations

  • Developing long-term strategic plans for United’s network

  • Building cross-functional working relationships throughout the commercial organization to align Pricing, Revenue Management, Sales, Marketing, and other teams around a unified strategy and improve decision making in all related domains

  • Optimizing United’s schedule for profitability while taking other stakeholder priorities into account, including safety, customer service, catering, inflight crew, aircraft performance, and others

  • Representing United as the subject matter expert for topics relevant to your scope of work

  • Proactively researching, developing, and presenting insights with an owner mentality to senior executives

Placement within the department will be determined during the selection process, dependent on experience, abilities and best fit.

Required qualifications

  • Current undergraduate student graduating in Spring 2020 pursuing a degree in Business, Finance/Economics, Transportation/Logistics, Mathematics, or related area of study

  • Completion of at least one internship or work experience in an analytical role

  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills required

  • Ability to handle simultaneous projects and adapt to a fast-paced, changing environment

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills

  • Proven proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and PowerPoint

  • Intellectual curiosity, desire to learn, ability to take initiative

Other Qualifications

  • Position is based in Chicago, IL – must be able to relocate

  • Start dates are in Summer 2020

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship now and in the future

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualifications

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
