Job overview and responsibilities

The Director will lead the team directly responsible for the development and management of the $1.7 billion annual healthcare benefits budget. Partnering with the Finance and Accounting organizations, the Director will establish annual budgets, measure actual spend, forecast trends and identify new mechanisms to improve performance tracking of the benefit plans to budget. The Director will also develop and provide actuarial sign-off of annual rates and employee contributions. In addition, the Director will establish and execute the financial controls surrounding the administration of United's employee benefit programs (ex: medical/dental/Rx coverage, long-term disability, group life, and/or auto insurance, FSA, COBRA, vision programs). The Director will also be responsible of evaluating present programs through research, surveys, and analysis of benefit trends and/or vendor management develops work plans, makes recommendations to Managing Director and Executive Officers regarding the annual rate setting process, employee contributions and overall workflows.

  • Develop and provide actuarial sign-off of annual rates, carrier rate negotiation support, trend analysis for all active and retiree medical, dental, and vision plans offered by United

  • Lead benefits analysis for negotiation of collectively bargained agreements including design evaluations and cost impacts

  • Responsible for benefit plan financial compliance, government filings, budgeting, A/P and cash movement controls and reporting

  • Establish and monitor annual forecast, ongoing measurement, and communication to various stakeholders

  • Keeping up to date on best practices and industry trends in our environment and use these while providing recommendations

  • Annual and ad hoc evaluation of plan design and financial impacts, including identifying opportunities, and evaluating alternatives.

  • Application of best practice, industry trends in our environment to provide recommendations


  • Understanding of best practice and industry trends in the areas of healthcare plans such as medical, dental, vision, disability, etc.

  • Demonstrated analytical and communication skills

  • Bachelors in related field

  • 10+ years experience in Benefits or related field

  • 2-3 years experience leading or managing a team

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position


  • Master's degree

  • Application of plan management practices in a union environment
