Job overview and responsibilities

The Principal Cloud Architect is responsible and accountable for providing hands-on architectural guidance and oversight for United Applications and Infrastructure within hybrid cloud strategy at United Airlines. This role is responsible for further development of cloud architectures with taking existing United Airline standards along with best practices to provide solution architectures for all commercial portfolio applications

  • Deliver cloud solutions using AWS and other public cloud services and as a key member of Commercial enterprise Architecture and Cloud Enablement, ensure success in building and migrating applications, software and services on cloud

  • Educate business and technology stakeholders on value propositions of cloud and participate in deep architectural discussions to ensure solutions are designed for successful deployment in the cloud

  • Capture and share best-practice knowledge amongst the technology community

  • Lead/support implementation of cloud environments and agile application development technologies in areas of: software development, integration, and test of software applications, and infrastructure

  • Coordinate enhancements and deployment efforts and to provide insight and recommendations for implementing cloud solutions

  • Oversee architecting and design of complex cloud solutions for the organizational business units

  • Serve as cloud SME for the more senior business and technology stakeholders

  • Work closely with developer teams to create an automated CI/CD pipeline

  • Deliver end-to-end automation of deployment, monitoring and infrastructure management in the cloud environment

  • Partners with various functional teams across the business and IT departments to support strategic enterprise vision and design for cloud consumption

  • Partners with engineering delivery teams to research, design and implement the appropriate technology needed to support the application portfolio

  • Partnership with the application architecture, network, and security engineering team is critical to ensure that the infrastructure architectural principals support the requirements and needs to automate.

  • Ensures compliance of architectural and engineering policies, standards and procedures

  • Monitor and stay abreast of industry trends and anticipate future direction of cloud application services, Infrastructure and cloud computing to innovate business solutions.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or other related field, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training.

  • 5 years of hands-on experience in architecture and designing highly complex, distributed applications using SOA, Microservices.

  • Thorough programming skills using java, C#, python

  • 2 to 3 years of hands-on experience in architecting and designing complex AWS applications involving container platforms using Kubernetes based OpenShift, AWS EKS and other native services like AWS S3, lambda, Kinesis, SNS, SQS, KMS, CloudFormation etc.

  • Ability to learn cloud native services and do the proof of concepts as part of the solutions.

  • 1 to 2 years experience with delivery of cloud Infrastructure with automation and DevOps, CI/CD

  • Programming applications to be optimized to work within constructs of an AWS environment

  • Developing templates or scripts to automate everyday developer or operations functions

  • Monitor and maintain multiple (DevOps) environments based on requirements

  • Experience across all domains in infrastructure including network, security, compute, storage and infrastructure, and application automation

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position


  • Airline/Transportation experience

  • Knowledge of other public cloud providers such as Azure, Google cloud

  • AWS Certifications
