The Environmental Affairs team helps United take actions today to shape an environmentally sustainable future. It department oversees environmental compliance, liability, policy, strategy and sustainability.

Job overview and responsibilities

Responsible for defining and managing the communication and stakeholder engagement strategy for United's environmental program. This includes oversite of the brand strategy for EcoSkies, implementation of a stakeholder engagement plan for key internal and external audiences, digital communications, social media strategy, employee engagement, event management, and other communication activities. This role requires strategic thinking, technical knowledge of environmental issues, exceptional communication and collaboration skills, and solid organizational skills. Support other duties as assigned.

  • Lead the development of Environmental Affair's communication strategy and stakeholder engagement plan to achieve the objectives of brand integrity and market leadership in environmental stewardship

  • Define annual goals for communication outreach that align with Environmental Affairs' overall program objectives

  • Engage key internal stakeholders to annually refresh the communication strategy and define a relevant stakeholder engagement plan for the year. Implement the plan accordingly

  • Facilitate execution of the plan with collaboration across United leadership, business units, and external stakeholders

  • Collaborate with team members across Environmental Affairs and United to implement communication activities accordingly. Activities may include EcoSkies brand refresh, definition of partner network and engagement activities to achieve Environmental goals, launch of stakeholder engagement programs such as employee engagement, event management, key messaging and talking point development, development and management of communication resources for the Environmental Affairs team.

  • Monitor developments and emerging opportunities applicable to your area of oversight

  • Establish individual and support team goals that align with Environmental Affairs goals

  • Manage individual performance and improvement plans

  • Coach, counsel, and assist employees to develop individual career development and training plans

  • Use technical knowledge experience to provide thoughtful decision making and guidance in strategic implementation of United’s objectives and initiatives

  • Be solution-oriented and committed to a creating and sustaining a culture of continual improvement and innovation

  • Model integrity, possess self-awareness, and foster an environment of accountability

  • Provide transparent communication to their Team, Leadership and Stakeholders

  • Mentor and develop a team that is empowered and engaged in the mission of the Environmental Affairs Department

Required

  • Bachelors degree in environmental sciences, communications, or related area

  • Minimum 8 years of communication experience

  • Experience leading the development and implementation of communication strategies for an organization

  • Experience with stakeholder engagement with key groups including industry, corporations, NGOs, employees, etc.

  • General understanding of environmental regulations and sustainability strategies

  • Strong interpersonal and judgment skills to lead cross-divisional teams towards collective

  • Strong interpersonal skills and executive presence

  • Top notch communication and presentation skills with experience presenting to senior management and/or external audiences required

  • Strategic/innovative thinking, long-term vision, and thought leadership

  • Proficient computer skills including WORD, EXCEL, OUTLOOK, and PowerPoint

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualifications

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

Preferred

  • Masters degree in business or environmental management or related area

  • Minimum 3 years management consulting experience

  • Change management experience

  • Consulting experience

  • Strong people management and communication skills

  • Strong collaboration and team-building skills to address improvement projects involving multiple groups and individuals of differing backgrounds and perspectives

  • Ability to build trust among stakeholders from environmental sustainability, Catering Operations, and other functional areas
