The Environmental team helps United take actions today to shape an environmentally sustainable future. It department oversees environmental compliance, liability, policy, strategy and sustainability.

Job overview and responsibilities

Lead a team that oversees domestic and/or international environmental requirements and sustainability within United's operations. Assist with the development and implementation of an environmental strategic plan that drives continual improvement in environmental requirements and sustainability initiatives, which in turn, drives progress towards United's environmental goals. This includes, but is not limited to, data collection, analysis, reporting, and implementation of various environmental requirement and sustainability initiatives. Support company’s global environmental strategy, policies, and programs by collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders. Support other duties as assigned.

  • Assist with the development of a strategic plan, goals and key performance indicators for facilities within your area of oversight that supports United's global environmental strategy.

  • Engage your team and internal key stakeholders in the development of your plan to ensure you gather their input and commitment.

  • The strategic plan will drive environmental requirements and sustainability initiatives and monitoring the effectiveness of these initiatives by collecting data, analysis, reporting and tracking progress towards goals.

  • Engage with station leadership to develop your strategic plan, goals and key performance indicators.

  • Communicate progress and opportunities, including the achievement of pre-determined milestones, associated with your strategic plan to station leadership.

  • Oversee a team of environmental professionals to implement the strategic environmental plan and support United's environmental management system.

  • This includes the development and implementation of compliance plans and oversight of compliance activity.

  • Ensure compliance with air, water, waste, hazardous material internal and external requirements and policies across varying company operations.

  • Ensure new requirements and policies applicable to your areas of oversight are implemented.

  • Support United's environmental management information system with data collection, analysis and reporting, including supporting our internal controls to monitor compliance with both internal and external policies and regulations.

  • Assist with the performance of audits, and timely implementation of audit finding corrective actions (including actions of other responsible parties at facility).

  • Assist with necessary corrective action from incidents and regulatory activity, including agency engagement.

  • Develop and implement sustainability initiatives that complement United's global environmental strategy and goals.

  • Coordinate with Environmental Affairs subject matter experts and program managers to develop and implement the environmental strategic plan.

  • Engage station leadership on environmental initiatives and progress towards individual station compliance and sustainability goals.

  • Establish team and individual goals that align with departmental goals.

  • Oversee direct reports’ and self’s individual performance and improvement plans.

  • Coach, counsel, and assist employees to develop individual career development and training plans. Use technical knowledge experience to provide thoughtful decision making and guidance in strategic implementation of United’s objectives and initiatives.

  • Mentor and develop a team that is empowered and engaged in the mission of the Environmental Affairs Department.

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or comparable environmental work experience with general understanding of environmental regulations

  • At least 7 years of environmental experience and 1 year of management experience with direct reports

  • Knowledge of environmental regulations such as, but not limited to CWA, CAA, RCRA, SPCC, and TSCA

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;

  • Demonstrates strong people, planning and organizational skills;

  • Proficient computer skills including WORD, EXCEL, OUTLOOK, and PowerPoint

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

Preferred

  • Masters degree in business or environmental management or related area

  • Airline and/or aviation experience

  • Knowledge of environmental regulations related to the aviation industry
