Corporate Real Estate

The Corporate Real Estate team is composed of Planning and Development (formally called Design and Construction) and Airport Affairs. These two teams work together to secure lease spaces and manage all major construction and renovation projects at our hubs, stations and city locations across the world

Job overview and responsibilities

Lead a team that oversees domestic and international air and noise environmental rules, emerging requirements, and sustainability within United's operations. Assist with the development and implementation of an air environmental strategic program that drives continual improvement in establishing compliant environmental requirements and sustainability initiatives, which in turn, drives progress towards United's environmental goals. This includes, but is not limited to, regulatory analysis and strategy, meeting with environmental regulators, giving Field Operations reporting guidance and training, consultant management, and pollution reduction sustainability initiatives. Support company’s global environmental strategy, policies, and programs by collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders. Support other duties as assigned.

  • Oversee a team of air environmental professionals to maintain and continuously improve the strategic air environmental program and support United's Environmental Management System (EMS).

  • This includes the development and implementation of regulatorily accurate air programs to be used by Field Operations.

  • This strategic program will drive environmental requirements and sustainability initiatives across the company.

  • Ensure that you work effectively with internal and external teams and policies across varying company operations.

  • Communicate effectively with regulators and industry groups to ensure that United's positions are articulated and considered.

  • Ensure new requirements and policies applicable to your areas of oversight are timely understood and programs developed with the input of all stakeholders.

  • Assist your team and Field Operations with necessary corrective actions and training, and engage with regulatory agencies as necessary.

  • Develop and implement sustainability initiatives that complement United's global environmental strategy and goals.

  • Develop and assist in implementation of the air and noise portions of the United environmental strategic plan, including training at United facilities.

  • Engage corporate leadership on environmental initiatives and progress towards regulatory and sustainability goals.

  • Support United's Environmental Management Information System(EMIS) by implementing programs that ensure compliance with both internal and external policies and regulations.

  • Ensure that numerical data within the air program is able to be accurately maintained within the EMIS and is transparent to the rest of the organization as required.

  • Analyze trends in air data for continuous improvement in air program management, including recommending new tools or equipment as needed.

  • Work with other internal stakeholders to model noise analysis for new airport service and other noise requirements as needed.

  • Engage your team and key stakeholders in the management of your program to ensure you gather their input and commitment.

  • Establish team and individual goals that align with departmental goals.

  • Oversee direct reports’ and self’s individual performance and improvement plans.

  • Coach, counsel, and assist employees to develop individual career development and training plans.

  • Use technical knowledge experience to provide thoughtful decision making and guidance in strategic implementation of United’s objectives and initiatives.

  • Be solution-oriented and committed to a creating and sustaining a culture of continual improvement and innovation.

  • Bachelor's degree or comparable environmental work experience with general understanding of environmental regulations

  • At least 5 years air quality experience

  • At least 1 year directly managing people

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrates strong people, planning and organizational skills

  • Expertise in domestic environmental regulations such as, but not limited to CAA, California air regulations, particularly South Coast and Bay Area.

  • Knowledge of international air regulations in the EU, South America, and Asia.

  • Proficient computer skills including WORD, EXCEL, OUTLOOK, and PowerPoint

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position


  • Masters degree in business or environmental management or related area

  • Airline and/or aviation experience

  • Knowledge of air and noise environmental regulations related to the aviation industry
