The Environmental Affairs team helps United take actions today to shape an environmentally sustainable future. It department oversees environmental compliance, liability, policy, strategy and sustainability.

Job overview and responsibilities

Responsible for managing the development and execution of United's sustainable fuel activities as part of United's overall global environmental strategy to decarbonize commercial air travel. Collaborate across the Sustainable Fuel team and United business divisions to implement sustainable fuel initiatives to drive progress towards meeting United's goal of reducing carbon emissions 50% by 2050. This includes but is not limited to analyzing sustainable fuel supply, technical analysis of feedstock and technology for production, negotiation of purchase agreements and investment options, evaluation of emerging decarbonization technologies, identification of operational efficiencies to drive down consumption of fuel, and engagement of corporate customers to achieve decarbonization objectives. This role requires strategic thinking, technical rigor, and exceptional communication and collaboration skills. Support other duties as assigned.

  • Support the development of a strategic plan, goals and key performance indicators that support United's global environmental sustainability strategy to decarbonize commercial air travel through sustainable fuel and other solutions

  • Understand and engage in market and industry discussions about the evolution of decarbonization drivers, policies, solutions, technologies and more

  • Represent United as a thought leader in this space, internally, across the industry, and with corporate partners

  • Engage key internal stakeholders in the development of the plan to gather their input and obtain their commitment in support of this emerging strategy

  • Facilitate execution of the plan with collaboration across United leadership, business units, and external stakeholders

  • The strategic plan will support compliance with environmental requirements and sustainability initiatives by monitoring effectiveness of these initiatives through collecting data, analysis, reporting and tracking progress towards goals

  • Collaborate with team members to implement the sustainable fuel strategy for United. This includes engaging in industry discussions of market trends for supply and other emerging solutions, technical evaluation of feedstocks and technology, procurement and execution of purchase agreements and investments to meet goals, and engagement across United's network of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Monitor regulatory developments and emerging policies applicable to your area of oversight

  • Support United's environmental management information system with data collection, analysis and reporting, including supporting our internal controls to monitor compliance with legal requirements as well as both internal and external policies

  • Establish individual and support team goals that align with Environmental Affairs goals

  • Manage individual performance and improvement plans

  • Coach, counsel, and assist employees to develop individual career development and training plans

  • Use technical knowledge experience to provide thoughtful decision making and guidance in strategic implementation of United’s objectives and initiatives

  • Be solution-oriented and committed to a creating and sustaining a culture of continual improvement and innovation

  • Model integrity, possess self-awareness, and foster an environment of accountability

  • Provide transparent communication to their Team, Leadership and Stakeholders

  • Mentor and develop a team that is empowered and engaged in the mission of the Environmental Affairs Department


  • Bachelors degree in environmental sciences/policy or related area

  • Minimum 8 years of environmental experience

  • Experience in evaluating complex business challenges and developing pragmatic solutions

  • Experience with stakeholder engagement with key groups including industry, corporations, NGOs, employees, etc.

  • General understanding of environmental regulations, sustainability, and green building standards

  • Strong interpersonal, executive presence, and judgment skills to lead cross-divisional teams towards collective

  • Top notch communication and presentation skills with experience presenting to senior management and/or external audiences

  • Strong analytical skills, and experience modeling and forecast market supplies

  • Strategic/innovative thinking, long-term vision, and thought leadership

  • Proficient computer skills including WORD, EXCEL, OUTLOOK, and PowerPoint

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position


  • Masters degree in business or environmental management or related area

  • Minimum 3 years management consulting experience

  • Change management experience

  • Consulting experience

  • Strong people management and communication skills

  • Strong collaboration and team-building skills to address improvement projects involving multiple groups and individuals of differing backgrounds and perspectives

  • Ability to build trust among stakeholders from environmental sustainability, Catering Operations, and other functional areas
