The Catering Operations department develops, creates and provides the great dining experiences on board our aircraft.

Starting Salary: $20.78/hr.

Job overview and responsibilities

The United Catering Operations Maintenance Lead position is responsible for the on-going maintenance, repair and upkeep of the facility as well as the equipment in support of the daily airline and retail operation in the flight kitchen. This position is responsible for performing daily checks and inspections on all facility and equipment items. This position is expected to comply with all United training requirements, safety procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Additionally, the Maintenance Lead position will participate in safety meetings and support the Safety Action Team.

  • Lead maintenance associates in daily maintenance operation

  • Maintain, troubleshoot and repair kitchen equipment i.e. refrigeration, air conditioning and or/ electrical

  • Blows down boiler and feed chemical

  • Contact necessary vendors to obtain cost-efficient bids or proposals in maintenance or repair as needed to maintain an efficient operation

  • Complete scheduled and unscheduled work orders

  • Operate and/or check emergency generator and fuel

  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot ice plant equipment and bagging ice

  • Maintain Federal, State, City and County regulations

  • Refill grease hood ventilator with detergent

  • Add salt to water softener equipment and trouble shoot equipment

  • Check and maintain pneumatic lines and regulators

  • Manage maintenance budget and staying within purchasing guidelines

  • Perform preventive maintenance on mechanical appliance and equipment

  • Maintain and troubleshoot dish machines

  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • High school graduate, GED or education equivalent

  • Other trade license requirement may vary by location

  • Working knowledge in one or more trades related to building maintenance and repair (boiler maintenance, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, refrigeration or general building repairs, and of machinery, equipment and tools necessary for the maintenance and repair of buildings)

  • Ability to perform basic math skills

  • Ability to work and communicate with Associates

  • Ability to read, speak and write English

  • Lifting and carrying up to 80 lbs.

  • Pushing and pulling up to 100 lbs.

  • Continuous climbing over 10 feet

  • Ability to operate equipment such as forklift, hand truck, pallet jack, baler, and other mechanical equipment

  • Continuous attention to detail and alertness while performing maintenance functions

  • Various temperatures in outdoor environment and in chilled areas for prolonged periods of time

  • Must be able to pass a mechanical skills aptitude test

  • Minimum 3 years work experience/certification training in one or more of the following trades: refrigeration, air conditioning and / or electrical

  • Valid driver's license and current driving abstract

  • Shifts to cover a 24-hour operation. Ability to work rotating shifts, including weekends, holidays and overtime as needed

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Must be able to obtain 10 year background security check

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
